Sapin-Sapin: Filipinx Art Festival is a celebration of our Filipino/a/x culture, while highlighting the diasporic talent in the lower mainland. This festival will highlight:
- four new short plays by emerging playwrights – “The Curse of Santa Milagrosa” by Oswald Pingol, “Isang Segundong Panukli” by Viktor Atencia, “Banyan Tree” by Abi Padilla, “Bien Facil” by Karla Commanda
- various performances including Burlesque by Karla Comanda, Kundiman by Dave Dagta
- and artistic community workshops led by established Filipinx artists – Movement Workshop by Alvin Tolentino, Visual Arts by Angel Bella, Creative Writing Workshop by Chris Nasaire, Acting Workshop by Argel Monte De Ramos
With the theme of the ultimate and well-loved Filipino layered rice cake, Sapin-Sapin, we explore our diverse and colourful culture, merging interdisciplinary forms of art and traditions, and dissect the layers of what it means to be Filipinx. Join us as we gather on Saturday, August 24, 2024 from 10 AM to 5 PM at West Mall Annex 110, UBC for the Community Workshops (Writing, Movement, Visual Arts, and Acting), and on Saturday, August 31, 2024 from 7 PM to 9 PM at Dorothy Somerset Studio, UBC for the Showcase and Culmination night of the festival.
Note: These plays will be bilingual — in Tagalog and English
Have fun with the community and enjoy great food after!
