In 1734, a Black Portuguese-born woman known by the name Marie-Joseph Angélique was publicly executed in Montréal, Canada for setting a fire as a distraction in an effort to escape enslavement.
Nurse Angélique Presents….! features performances by local queer artists — non-cis / non-white bodies that historically were excluded from Canadian nursing practice. It will showcase a piece developed by artist nurse scholar Kyra Philbert for her Master of Science in Nursing thesis (UBC, 2023).
Supported by a Public Humanities Seed Grant, this drag-burlesque experience re-imagines the historical figure as a contemporary registered nurse to wonder:
What makes Blackness so surprising in Canadian nursing?
Rendering this question by Katherine McKittrick specific to a profession that proclaims an ethos of social justice, Kyra critically explores the wonder of Black Canada to revise nursing history.
There will an artist talk-back facilitated by Mx. Bukuru with Kyra Philbert post-performance. Folks will be able to ask questions and provide commentary.
Performers: Mx. Bukuru, Cleo Victory, Rose Butch.
