UBC Canadian Studies’ Brenda and David McLean Lectures presents the “Another Canada” series.
What does it mean to love and lose a friend, a place, a nation?
This talk explores the complex and complicit relationship between nationalism, nostalgia and music through a case study of the Tragically Hip, considered to be the quintessential Canadian band. Paying close attention to Indigenous critiques, the paper will explore what it means to ask anti-colonial questions when one is grieving the loss of a vaunted Canadian icon.
