Looking for a Place to Happen

Details of Dr. Minelle Mahtani's talk on nationalism, nostalgia, and music through a case study of the Tragically Hip beside the band's album cover for Fully Completely. Part of the UBC Canadian Studies McLean Lectures series. Hosted by Green College.

UBC Canadian Studies’ Brenda and David McLean Lectures presents the “Another Canada” series.

What does it mean to love and lose a friend, a place, a nation?
This talk explores the complex and complicit relationship between nationalism, nostalgia and music through a case study of the Tragically Hip, considered to be the quintessential Canadian band. Paying close attention to Indigenous critiques, the paper will explore what it means to ask anti-colonial questions when one is grieving the loss of a vaunted Canadian icon.
