Remembering Dr. Y-Dang Troeung

The Public Humanities Hub would like to offer its sincere condolences to Chris Patterson (GRSJ), former Hub Advisory Board Member, on the death of his life-partner, UBC-Vancouver Humanities scholar Y-Dang Troeung, on November 27th, 2022 after a year-long battle with cancer. Those of you who knew her know that Y-Dang was a model colleague: generous, ethical, inspiring. Her scholarship was like Y-Dang herself: profound and courageous. Scholar Jasbir Puar described Y-Dang’s recent monograph Refugee Lifeworlds: The Afterlife of the Cold War in Cambodia, published in Temple UP’s prestigious Asian American History and Culture series, “a brilliant weaving of epistemological intervention, autofiction as political grievance, and abolitionist knowledge production. Argued with care and beautifully written, this profound book is invaluable for understanding the intersections of war, imperialism, and disability.” Y-Dang will be sorely missed by her family, friends, students, and colleagues at UBC and beyond. Deepest condolences to Y-Dang’s husband, young son, and extended family.
