Whether by persecution and/or migration, too many once-thriving Jewish communities are gone. And by neglect or willful destruction, many of the physical traces of those communities have also disappeared. The resulting absences are sometimes in the service of regimes that want to deny a multi-ethnic past. They are also an insult that intensifies the anguish of the descendants of those communities.
This event, co-sponsored by the Public Humanities Hub, the Department of History and the Holocaust Education Committee, presents two geo-mapping projects that resist those erasures. Diarna is the Geo-Museum of North African and Middle Eastern Jewish Life and Mnemonics, which includes details on lost Jewish communities in Ukraine, promotes the “formation of inclusive memory culture in Ukraine.”
